Macquarie Perch Recovery Hatchery
We’re building a state-of-the-art Macquarie Perch Recovery Hatchery at our Snobs Creek fish hatchery, near Eildon.
The new facility will be central to our goal of producing 500,000 Macquarie perch and 500,000 trout cod annually.
Once widespread throughout the south-eastern Murray Darling system, the recovery of these two iconic freshwater native species is supported by our stocking, research efforts to boost their production, and improvements to in-stream habitat.
Construction is set to be completed by the end of 2025 and complements the expansion of our Arcadia native fish hatchery, which once completed will have the capacity to produce 6 million Murray cod and golden perch annually.
Upgrades to both hatcheries are a key component of the Victorian Government’s $96 million Go Fishing and Boating plan.
Production update
In 2024-25, nearly 100,000 Macquarie perch and a record-breaking 141,000 trout cod were produced at Snobs and released across their historic range. Our new Macquarie Perch Recovery Hatchery will see these numbers increase significantly.
