Commercial

Victoria’s commercial fisheries date back to the time of European settlement in the 1840s, and have been managed under various Fisheries Acts since 1859. Today, they supply a wide variety of species to both domestic and international markets, delivering some of the world’s finest seafood – including abalone, rock lobster, King George whiting and snapper.

To ensure these valuable resources remain available for future generations, the Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) manages our fisheries to world-class standards, using a range of fisheries management tools and strategies. Working closely with the broader seafood industry, the VFA supports commercial fishers to build viable, profitable and sustainable businesses.

Thanks to this ongoing commitment, lovers of seafood, along with chefs and restaurant owners, can continue to enjoy a reliable supply of premium Victorian seafood for years to come.
