Australian bass
The Australian bass is a prized freshwater native species endemic to the coastal waters of East Gippsland. They have become more popular over the years, with Blue Rock Lake and Lake Glenmaggie emerging as hotspots.
Similar in appearance to estuary perch, bass can be distinguished by their shallower body, less glossy appearance, and darker body markings. Their anal and pelvic fins have white tips, with a white rear margin on the pelvic fin.
Bass feed on a range of aquatic and terrestrial organisms, including fish, minnows, shrimp and insects, and are particularly fond of cicada nymphs and moths. These hardy fish pack a significant punch, with even small fish capable of leading you into a fierce battle. To add to their appeal, bass love a wide range of lures, especially those presented on the surface.
