Corner Inlet Fishery Management Plan

Development of a Corner Inlet Fishery Management Plan

The Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) has commenced development of a Corner Inlet Fishery Management Plan. This initiative represents a positive development for the commercial fishing industry in South Gippsland and the wider community.

The Plan will provide direction and identify measures to ensure the efficient, effective and ecologically sustainable management of fishing in Corner Inlet. It will bring together commercial fishers, recreational fishers, VFA staff, conservation representatives, Traditional Owners and other interested parties on initiatives aimed at improving the fishery.

The statutory requirements for fishery management plans are specified in the Fisheries Act 1995. There will be a minimum 60-day public consultation period on a draft Plan, which is expected to take place in 2021. All stakeholders will be able to have their say on the future management of the fishery.

A Steering Committee has now been established to provide advice to the VFA in preparation of a draft Plan. The final Plan will be subject to approval and declaration by the Minister for Fishing and Boating.
