Get your cod fix at the third annual Murray Codference

29 October 2018

Recreational anglers can once again learn about Victoria’s Murray cod fisheries and how to improve their own fishing success at the third annual Murray Codference in Shepparton on Sunday 9 December.

Freshwater Fisheries Manager Anthony Forster said this years’ Murray Codference will be bigger than ever, with sensational speakers and the very latest on how our native fish are tracking.

“The Codference is a fantastic way for recreational fishers to learn all about the iconic Murray cod, as well as other popular recreational species like golden perch and bass and recovering species like trout cod and Macquarie perch,” Mr Forster said.

The keynote speaker is Australia’s own USA Bass Pro tournament champion, Carl Jocumsen, who will be sharing his epic journey into competition fishing and the latest tournament tactics.

To help anglers improve their fishing skills and knowledge, Lubin Pfeiffer will talk about his tactics to catch big Murray cod and Stephen Booth will cover the latest golden perch fishing techniques.

Bill Classon will reflect on Victoria’s native fish revolution, Will Trueman will talk about bringing trout cod and Macquarie perch back and Robbie Alexander about fishing local waters and getting kids involved.

“Researchers will also be sharing how our native fish populations have improved over the last 20 years and what’s made the biggest difference,” Mr Forster said.

The Codference will also revisit and remind anglers of the Care for Cod campaign, which encourages fishers to carefully handle big Murray cod.

All participants will receive:

A Codference satchel

A copy of the Codference proceedings

A limited-edition Care for Cod Kattafurra surface lure;

A Care for Cod boat decal sticker;

A Care for Cod removable tattoo (for the kids).

The free Codference will be held at the Eastbank Conference Centre, 70 Welsford Street, Shepparton, from 9am until 4pm. Tea, coffee and lunch will be provided.

This event is part of the State Government’s Target One Million plan for recreational fishing, which is investing a record $46 million to get more people fishing, more often.

Last year, the Victorian Fisheries Authority stocked almost 1.7 million Murray cod in 50 waters, including at our newest and most exciting native fishery at Rocklands Reservoir.

We’re expecting more than 300 participants to attend the Codference, so get in early! To reserve your seat, register at www.vfa.vic.gov.au/codference2018.
