Works have begun at Lake Boga to improve shore-based fishing access for recreational anglers including a new fishing platform and extra fish habitat.

Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) CEO, Travis Dowling, said the Lake Boga Sports Fishing Club received a $100,000 grant from the State Government’s Target One Million plan, which is investing a record $46 million to get more people fishing, more often.

“The T-shaped floating platform will be located on the north-west side of the lake and extend out across the water more than 20 metres,” Mr Dowling said.

“The platform will provide a much needed safe and stable surface from which to cast a bait or lure.

“The project is being undertaken in partnership with the North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA), which has completed rock beaching on the foreshore and coordinated revegetation along the bank.

“Funding for foreshore rehabilitation works, worth over $30,000, was provided through the State Government’s Angler-Riparian Partnerships Program.

“VicRoads and Kilter Rural have also contributed to the project, donating large woody habitat consisting of box trees and root balls, which will be installed at a castable distance from the new fishing platform.

“Works are expected to be complete by January 2019.

“Lake Boga is stocked annually by the VFA with thousands of Murray cod and golden perch fingerlings, funded by fishing licence fees and Target One Million.

“Improving angler access is a key component of Target One Million, which has delivered lots for inland fishing including record stocking of more than 6 million and saving Lake Toolondo.”
