New jetty for anglers at Lake Boga

12 May 2016

Recreational anglers now have better access to Lake Boga, near Swan Hill, thanks to a new 30 metre long jetty alongside the concrete boat ramp at Jacaranda Crescent.

Fisheries Victoria Executive Director, Travis Dowling, said the project had been managed by the Swan Hill Rural City Council with funding from the State Government.

"The new jetty provides boat-based anglers with a safe platform from which to board vessels and a convenient spot to tie up while launching and retrieving," Mr Dowling said.

"Land-based anglers have not been forgotten either with a dedicated fishing platform at the end of the jetty that provides good access to deeper water on the western side of the lake.

"Lake Boga is a popular local fishery, stocked annually with golden perch and Murray cod by Fisheries Victoria using State Government funds and recreational fishing licence fees.

"The lake is also home to a self-sustaining population of redfin, which are very popular with freshwater anglers as they are an excellent table fish.

Mr Dowling said the installation of the floating jetty at Lake Boga complemented another fishing-improvement project recently completed there.

"In 2014, around 100 man-made timber 'fish motels' were installed into Lake Boga and Kangaroo Lake as part of a $262,500 project to enhance native fish habitat and improve fishing opportunities.

"Feedback from anglers suggests these structures have worked well with reports of good catches taken in their vicinity over summer."

"Improving fishing opportunities and facilities is a key component of the State Government's 'Target One Million' plan, which aims to grow participation to one million anglers by 2020, boost fish stocking from three to five million per annum and strengthen angling club membership.
