Giant Crab Fishery Harvest Strategy Development
The Victorian Giant Crab Fishery Harvest Strategy was formalised in 2025, following development by a dedicated steering committee. Harvest strategies provide a structured framework for assessing the status of a fishery and set rules to determine the annual catch limits.
The current Giant Crab Fishery Management Plan, including the existing harvest control rules, was declared in 2010. Recognising the need to update the stock management arrangements, the Rock Lobster and Giant Crab Resource Assessment Group (RLRAG) recommended a new strategy be developed. The review commenced in June 2024 by a dedicated sub-committee of the RLRAG and a draft strategy was released for public consultation in early 2025.
The new harvest strategy sets in place key decision rules for managing the fishery whilst continuing to meet the key objectives outlined in the Victorian Giant Crab Fishery Management Plan.
