Giant Crab Fishery Harvest Strategy Development
A new harvest strategy is currently under development for the Victorian Giant Crab Fishery. Harvest strategies provide a structured framework for assessing the status of a fishery and set rules to determine the annual catch limits.
The current Giant Crab Fishery Management Plan, including the current Harvest Strategy, was declared in 2010. Recognising the need to update the stock management arrangements, the Rock Lobster and Giant Crab Resource Assessment Group (RLRAG) recommended a new strategy be developed. The review commenced in June 2024 by a dedicated sub-committee of the RLRAG and a draft strategy has now been released for public consultation.
The draft harvest strategy sets in place new decision rules for managing the fishery whilst continuing to meet the key objectives outlined in the Victorian Giant Crab Fishery Management Plan.
A link to the draft harvest strategy is included below. For details outlining how to make a submission, please refer to the Victorian Fisheries Authority’s Current Consultation webpage.
