Have your say on a proposed size limit for mako shark

18 April 2018

Shark fishing is popular from boats, the shore and piers across Victoria.

Following consideration of a proposal from recreational fishing group VRFish, the Victorian Fisheries Authority is proposing to introduce a minimum size limit of 120cm for mako shark species.

Victorian Fisheries Authority CEO, Travis Dowling, said the size limit would apply to all species of mako shark.

"Mako shark current fit within the overarching shark category which is subject to a bag possession limit of 1 per species and no size limit at present," said Mr Dowling.

"The proposed 120cm minimum size limit would be measured from the rear most gill slit to the base of the tail fin on any side of the body.

"Recreational fishers are continuing to demonstrate stewardship over Victorian fisheries and support actions that help ensure fish for the future.

"The proposed minimum size limit will increase protection to juvenile sharks and ensure that game shark fishing in Victorian waters continues to provide an exciting experience."

Public consultation on the proposed minimum size limit closes on 8 June 2018. More information on the proposal and information on how to make a submission can be found at www.vfa.vic.gov.au/gameshark.
