Competition opens to find favourite fishy anthems

01 February 2019

Anglers and music fans looking for a little audio inspiration need look no further than the Victorian Fisheries Authority’s (VFA) ‘Fishiest 100’ competition that began today and runs until 28 February.

The Fishiest 100 is a music poll on the VFA Facebook page that encourages people to share and vote on the music that inspires them when fishing or their favourite fishing themed song.

The Fishiest 100 aligns with the State Government’s Target One Million plan to get more people fishing, more often and boost participation to one million by 2020.

CEO Travis Dowling said the VFA Fishiest 100 is a fresh way to engage seasoned anglers and new recreational fishers alike.

“Through Target One Million we’ve done a great job of getting more kids casting a line but there’s an opportunity to get more millennials into fishing too. We know they love music and believe our Fishiest 100 is a fun way to spark their interest in angling through a medium they really connect with.

“The VFA Fishiest 100 is part of bigger plan we’ll be implementing to reach young people through events and other initiatives that will appeal to them.”

Mr Dowling encouraged everyone, young and old, to jump on the bandwagon and get their favourite fishy beats included in the line-up.

“The first 200 valid song nominations suggested on our Fishiest 100 Facebook post published today will be added to a poll for people to vote on from 8 February.

“Voting will close on 22 February and we will then compile our VFA Fishiest 100 playlist based on poll results and make it available to listen to through Spotify on 28 February.

“Five $100 fishing tackle voucher prizes will be up for grabs. One will be awarded to the person whose song is voted most popular and four others will be drawn at random from the music poll.

“We know that being quiet often helps when fishing but sometimes pumping up the tunes in the car or boat enroute to your favourite spot really gets you in the mood for a big day on the water.

“Whether it’s catchy contemporary tracks or ballads from yesteryear, we can’t wait to hear the music that gets anglers amped up about fishing. So, if you want your song to be an anthem on Victorian waterways this year then take part in the VFA Fishiest 100 now!”
