04 March 2021
The Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) has commenced a recruitment drive for seven trainee fisheries officers with a view to filling seven vacant positions across the state.
VFA Chief Executive Officer Travis Dowling said the roles would suit passionate individuals with integrity wanting a challenging career protecting our fisheries resources for future generations.
“It’s a job outside the nine to five norm, where your office is Victoria’s beautiful waterways,” said Mr Dowling.
“The VFA is committed to increasing the cultural diversity of its workforce and is strongly encouraging people from Vietnamese, Chinese, Burmese or Malaysian cultures to apply.
“Those applicants will be given priority consideration in the recruitment process as part of the Special Measures provision of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010.”
“Six of the trainee positions will be full time with one part-time position based at Queenscliff.
“Once candidates successfully complete the initial 10-week residential training course in Queenscliff they will then undertake on-the-job field training with experienced officers for the remainder of their 12-month traineeship.
“At the end of the 12-month training program successful candidates will be able to apply for ongoing fisheries officer vacancies throughout the State.
“Day to day duties vary enormously and range from educating new fishers about the basics, to enforcing recreational and commercial fishing rules, and apprehending people involved in serious illegal fishing activity.
“Officers help people learn about responsible and sustainable fishing practices, assist with releasing fish into our lakes and rivers to boost wild populations, and fisheries management activities.
“They also work with other natural resource management, maritime safety and emergency management agencies to protect our valuable aquatic environments and keep people safe while on the water.”
