Take Mum fishing this Mothers Day
23 April 2019
Victorians are being encouraged to take their mums fishing this coming Mothers Day, Sunday 12 May, as a great way to relax and unwind with the family.
Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) CEO, Travis Dowling, said Melburnians could take mum along to a free come and try fishing event at Albert Park Lake.
“Bring your mum, grandma and the kids because the day has something for everyone,” Mr Dowling said.
“It’s all part of the State Government’s $34 million Target One Million plan to get more people fishing, more often, including mums.
“Wetting a line with family and friends is great for mental health and helps people get outside and active, spending more time with the people they care about most and away from the distractions of a busy modern life.”
The free event builds on the VFA’s Women in Recreational Fishing (WIRF) network, a Facebook group with more than 1,000 female members that was created to give women a support-network and a place to ask their fishing-related questions.
The Albert Park Lake event will run from 9am until 1pm near The Point in Aquatic Drive with free fishing clinics, casting competitions and knot tying demonstrations on offer.
Trout will be stocked on the day to increase everyone’s chance of catching a fish.
VFA ambassador and AFL Women’s rising star, Chloe Molloy, will bring her mum along on the day and fitness guru, Nike trainer and yoga instructor Stefanie Turner will run a free 30-minute morning yoga session and a fishing-themed meditation session.
A Q&A panel will see Chloe and Stefanie sharing their experiences and tips on health, nutrition and well-being while fishing expert and WIRF leader Jo Starling will join the panel and share her personal story about how fishing helped her cancer recovery.
