Learn to fish at free clinics during school holidays

17 September 2015

Families with children who are keen to learn about fishing are being invited along to free clinics these September school holidays.

Fisheries Victoria Executive Director, Travis Dowling, said the 'Take the Bait' fishing clinics were part of the State Government's Target One Million plan for recreational fishing, which aims to get more people fishing, more often.

"There are six clinics planned for next week, each of one hour duration, at four locations in Victoria's southwest and in Gippsland," Mr Dowling said.

"All the fishing gear is provided, along with expert tuition, so they are the perfect opportunity for newcomers to wet a line and try their luck.

"On Wednesday 23 September, two clinics are scheduled at Hyland Lake in Churchill (10am and midday) and a third clinic at Kernot Lake in Morwell at 2.30pm.

"On Friday 25 September, two clinics are scheduled in Warrnambool on the Hopkins River (10am) and at Lake Pertobe (3pm) along with a third clinic at Tea Tree Lake in Mortlake at 12.30pm.

"Places are limited to ensure a great experience for participants so bookings are essential. Call Mick Douthat on 0409 441 745 to book places for clinics on 23 September and Natashar Wills on 0428 350 725 for 25 September clinics.

"Children must be accompanied by an adult and participants should wear shoes (not thongs) and are welcome to bring along a favourite fishing rod from home if they have one."

Target One Million will also introduce children's fishing programs to schools, increase fish stocking from three million to five million, establish a Better Fishing Facilities Fund and help angling clubs strengthen membership via a grants program.
