Get hooked this long weekend at Lakes Entrance

04 March 2020

Counting down the days to the long weekend and wondering how you can support bushfire affected communities?

How about a road-trip to the free ‘Hooked on Lakes Entrance’ event this Sunday 8 March where you can try delicious seafood, learn more about where your fresh fish comes from or cast a line with experts.

Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) CEO Travis Dowling said event visitors would be helping bushfire affected communities by staying local and spending in small regional businesses that have endured a tough summer trade.

“Lakes Entrance is a fishing mecca and home to one of Australia's largest commercial fishing fleets,” Mr Dowling said.

“It also offers fantastic recreational fishing for a suite of species including tagged fish worth $10,000 through the Golden Tag competition.”

“They’re all reasons why Lake Entrance is the perfect spot to host this celebration of Victorian seafood, which will showcase what commercial fishers catch in Gippsland, other delicious local produce and great fishing spots.”

This weekend’s event is on the Lakes Entrance Foreshore Reserve from 10am till 4pm and will boast new elements to keep everyone excited about fishing and tourism in the region including:

  • Seafood cooking and filleting demonstrations by Mark Briggs from Sardine Eatery and Sam Mahlook from Miriam's seafood restaurant;
  • Free Fishcare 'Come and Try' fishing clinics for kids and families;
  • Local food stands and regional produce;
  • Pop up bar;
  • Kids amusements; and
  • Family-friendly areas to enjoy the waterfront views.

Mr Dowling said Hooked on Lakes Entrance is ideal for families keen to explore beautiful waterways over a long weekend, and a great way to support the road to recovery for bushfire affected communities (#emptyesky) still getting back on their feet.
