Introduction

Background

The annual regional consultative meetings (CONS) provide a forum for discussion on fish stocking regimes, fish population surveys and other related recreational fisheries management issues. Meetings involve representatives from The Department of Primary Industries (DPI), the Victorian Recreational Fishing peak body (VRFish), Water Management Authorities, Catchment Management Authorities, the department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE), and other organisations interested in recreational fishing.

The meetings:

  • Review the current year's stocking plan and identify necessary modifications,
  • Draft the following year¡¯s stocking plan,
  • Identify management questions to be answered by stock or catch assessments,
  • Identify current fishery management issues.

The meetings are the focal points for information from various sources, including requests and viewpoints from anglers.  Draft reports of the meetings are prepared by DPI and circulated to participating stakeholders for comment. The Department acknowledges and commends the important contributions made by stakeholders who give up their time to prepare for, and attend, these meetings.

Family Fishing Lakes Program

In addition to more than 1.3 million salmonid and native fish stocked into lakes, impoundments and rivers, Fisheries Victoria undertakes an annual program of stocking on-\grown or advanced yearling trout into smaller waters.  These waters are normally less than 5 hectares in surface area and are primarily located in in popular areas with access for junior and disabled anglers.  This program was previously know as the Small Waters Program but is now referred to as the Family Fishing Lakes Program.

School holiday and/or other events including Fishing Week are targeted for these releases, with the majority coinciding with the second and third term holidays when water temperatures are best suited to trout.  Rainbow trout are usually stocked, as they are normally bigger than the available brown trout at that time of year and are reputedly easier to catch by inexperienced anglers.

Go Fishing in Victoria

GO FISHING IN VICTORIA INITIATIVE

The Victorian Government¡¯s 2005 Provincial Statement:-\ Moving Forward: Making Provincial Victoria the best place to live, work and invest recognises recreational fishing as a major social and economic contributor to provincial communities and a major tourism drawcard. It is estimated that the amount spent by anglers on fishing-\related equipment or activities in Victoria is around $400 million. The Government has committed an additional $3.2million to the Go Fishing in Victoria initiative which will substantially improve recreational fishing and associated tourism outcomes in provincial Victoria over the next four years. This will be achieved by providing increased opportunities for recreational fishing across provincial Victoria, improved recreational fishing facilities and infrastructure at selected sites while promoting and encouraging a more family friendly image of the sport.

PREMIER LAKES

As part of the Go Fishing in Victoria initiative, five of the Family Fishing Lakes have been selected to be developed as Premier Lakes to encourage families and new anglers to go fishing. Premier Lakes will offer access for anglers of all ages and abilities, feature family friendly facilities such as toilets, BBQs, picnic tables and playground equipment. Premier Lakes will be partly stocked with larger 'Premier¡¯ rainbow trout (> 1 kg) at least four times per year (subject to suitable water conditions). Stocking at Lillydale Lake, Eildon Pondage and Kennington Reservoir has already commenced. Following further development of facilities, stocking of 'Premier¡¯ fish at Hyland Lake, Churchill and Jubilee Lake, Daylesford will commence in 2008.

FAMILY FISHING EVENTS

The five Premier Lakes will be the focus of Family Fishing Events -\ fun days when families and kids can learn to catch a fish. These events will be gradually scheduled at each of the five Premier Lakes over the next three years and will be planned and run in partnership with VRFish, local angling clubs, local councils, Fishcare volunteers and other stakeholders.

Premier Rivers

To cater for more experienced anglers, sections of the Hopkins, Goulburn and Kiewa rivers will be developed and promoted as Premier Rivers. The rivers have been chosen for their existing riverine environments and high recreational angling values.

Funds will be invested into on-\ground works that improve access for anglers and provide additional recreational fishing facilities. Following this an information package will be developed for each of the river stretches identifying key access points and the type of fishing experience and facilities that they provide.

For more information on the Go Fishing in Victoria initiative visit www.dpi.vic.gov.au/gofishing.

Managing Recreational Trout Fisheries Brochure

Trout are one of the most targetted species in inland Victorian waters and are considered a choice table fish by many fishers. Nearly half of all trout harvested in Australia are caught in Victoria.

Trout have been stocked in Victorian waters since the 1860s. Since 1960, over forty-\one million trout have been released in numerous lakes, rivers and streams across the state.

Today, management practices provide an integrated approach to freshwater fisheries management. Fisheries Victoria utilises a combination of regulation, stocking and habitat advocacy to manage trout fisheries.

The Victorian Government recognises the significant social and economic benefits resulting from well-\managed recreational trout fisheries. It is committed to maintaining and, where possible, enhancing these fisheries across Victoria.

In support of this aim Fisheries Victoria has produced a brochure titled 'Managing Recreational Trout Fisheries for the Benefit of Victorian Communities'. The brochure is available in pdf form at www.dpi.vic.gov.au/fishing. Alternatively contact the Customer Service Centre on 13 61 86 to request a printed copy.

Managing Native Fisheries Brochure

Almost half of the angling effort in Victoria occurs on freshwater lakes, rivers and streams, resulting in major economic and social benefits to regional communities. Murray cod, golden perch and Australian bass are the more frequently targeted native species.

Fisheries Victoria released a new brochure in February 2007 titled 'Managing Native Fisheries for the Benefit of Provincial Victoria. The brochure is available in pdf form at www.dpi.vic.gov.au/fishing. Alternatively contact the Customer Service Centre on 13 61 86 to request a printed copy.

Fish Habitat Protection ¨C Fisheries Notice

Many recreational fisheries remain severely affected by the continuing dry conditions and are experiencing very low water levels. During these times the collection of standing and fallen dead timber from exposed lake beds depletes fish habitat and limits the future suitability for valuable native fish species, such as Murray cod and golden perch.

Fisheries Victoria intends to extend a Fisheries Notice that bans the removal of dead timber, fallen or standing, from below the high water mark of nominated impoundments.

This increased protection strengthens existing water authority by-\laws controlling the harvest of ttimber from lakebeds. Permanent protection continues to be investigated. The list of waters for 2007/2008 is:

Inland Fisheries Management Plans

A process of preparing ten inland fishery management plans has recently commenced. The management plans are being developed on a geographic basis and align with the ten Catchment Management Authority (CMA) regions in Victoria, consistent with advice from the Fisheries Co-\Management Council.

The first of these new inland fishery management plans, the Glenelg Hopkins Fishery Management Plan (GHFMP), was finalised in October 2006. The GHFMP will provide management direction for the Glenelg Hopkins region for the next five years. The draft North East Fishery Management Plan was released for public comment in late 2006 and will be finalised for approval this year. The preparation of the Corangamite and West Gippsland fishery management plans has also commenced. The remaining six plans will be developed over the next three years.

All management plans are being prepared with oversight from an independently chaired steering committee that includes representatives from VRFish (2 nominees), CMAs, Indigenous interests, Fisheries Co-\Management Council, water authorities, the Department of Sustainability and Environment and Fisheries Victoria. The public will have an opportunity to have input into the preparation of the management plans through public meetings and by providing comment on draft management plans.

Translocation of Fish in VictorianInland Public Waters

The Protocols for the Translocation of fish in Victorian Inland Public Waters document is now available on the DPI website.

The protocols have been developed in accordance with the Guidelines for the Translocation of Aquatic Organisms in Victoria and describe the measures that apply to the translocation of native and salmonid species for recreational fishing and conservation purposes. The guidelines provide the basis for insuring the continued availability of stocking as a fishery management tool. The protocols take account of the substantial benefits associated with well-\managed stocking programs while providing a framework to minimise the potential risks associated with translocations of this nature.

Fish Production at Snobs Creek Hatchery

The ongoing drought has significantly affected most of our lakes and streams throughout regional Victoria. Likewise, fish production at Snobs Creek hatchery has also become increasingly difficult.

A risk assessment carried out in mid 2006 identified the major threats to fish production at the hatchery. Reduced water supply and increased water temperatures were identified as high risks.

Several strategies were implemented beginning with the liberation of all ¡°excess¡± stock in late 2006. This was followed by a significant investment in a direct oxygen injection system which is now in operation. The amount of dissolved oxygen in the water available for fish decreases with the increase in water temperature. The benefit this new technology gives is that the level of dissolved oxygen in the water is significantly boosted, which effectively increases their tolerance to warmer water temperatures.

In response to the continuing lack of quality water for stocking, further stock reduction was carried out with the early commencement of the 2007 stocking program into those waters that have reasonable water levels.

The strategy underpinning management of the Snobs Creek hatchery is that Fisheries Victoria will retain its capacity to quickly respond with increased production when environmental conditions improve.

Fish Stockings

The tables in Appendix 1 detail the planned stocking rates for the 2007/08 season as determined through the Regional Consultation (CONS) process. The figures indicated are based on the projected water levels for each of the identified water bodies. Any figures shown in brackets are the maximum stocking rates approved for 2007/08 if water levels substantially exceed current projections.

The numbers of fish listed are those proposed but actual numbers stocked may vary in response to environmental or other factors.

SALMONIDS ¨C FAMILY FISHING LAKES

The Family Fishing Lakes Program stocks readyto-\catch advanced yearling rainbow trout into suitable impoundments. The primary purpose is to provide a recreational fishing experience to junior anglers and anglers with restricted mobility. To achieve this, the waters are found close to populated areas and with good access.

Stockings of rainbow trout are aligned with the second and/or third term school holidays plus any Fishing Week or junior fishing clinic events. This generally coincides with water temperatures best suited to trout. In most instances rainbow trout are stocked as they are normally larger than the available brown trout at that time of year and are reputedly easier to catch by inexperienced anglers.

Five of the Family Fishing Lakes have been selected to be developed as Premier Lakes as part of the Go Fishing in Victoria initiative. Stocking at Lillydale Lake, Eildon Pondage and Kennington Reservoir has already commenced. Following further development of facilities, stocking of 'Premier¡¯ fish at Hyland Lake, Churchill and Jubilee Lake, Daylesford will commence in 2008.

Depending on availability, small numbers of exbroodstock rainbow trout may also be released into Family Fishing and Premier Lakes.

Advanced yearling rainbow trout generally range in weight from 150 ¨C 200 g, Premier fish are 1,000 g or larger and ex-\broodstock can be in excess of 3,000 g.

Fish Population Surveys

LITTLE RIVER WULGULMERANG CREEK SURVEY

Introduction

A commitment made at CONS 2006 to survey the Wulgulmerang Creek and Little River was made after claims by local anglers (Bairnsdale Fly Fishing Club) that the total population of trout above the falls was lost in the 2003 fires. Fisheries Victoria required current validated information regarding the status of trout stocks in the Little River and Wulgulmerang Creeks.

Survey Method

Single pass, backpack electrofishing.

Study sites

At the time of the survey water levels were extremely low and the creeks were dry with only the occasional isolated pool. Three sites were sampled in the Little River catchment above the Little River gorge; Little River at the Snowy River Road crossing; Wombargo Creek (a tributary of the Little River) at the Limestone Road crossing; and Wulgulmerang Creek at the McKillops Road crossing.

Results

A total of 19 trout were sampled from all sites. The length to caudal fork (lcf) of these trout ranged from 30 mm to 342 mm and length frequency charts indicate possibly four size classes. The Little River site only produced small trout (30 mm) and the Wulgulmerang Creek site produced larger trout (between 282-\342 mm).

The Wombargo Creek produced a range of size classes. The smallest trout was 43 mm and the largest was 208 mm in length. The Wombargo Creek site produced seven brown trout in possibly three size classes.

Discussion

The notion that brown trout are not present in the Little River catchment above the Little River gorge is incorrect. Brown trout are present in some places in the Little River catchment above the Little River gorge. The streams were drought affected at the time of the survey and were not flowing. However, trout were present where there were isolated pools that provided refuge. There was evidence that breeding has occurred over the last few seasons. Trout under 60 mm (lcf) were likely to be last years recruits.

The presence of trout in larger size classes, especially above 300 mm indicates that mature trout are also present in the system. The trout populations are relatively plastic and can recover very quickly given suitable conditions. There is a base of trout present in the Little River catchment and the overall population of trout would be expected to increase if water conditions improve in the future.

In light of the survey results, Fisheries Victoria does not support stocking in either the Little River or Wulgulmerang Creek

COWWAR WEIR

A Regional Fisheries Victoria survey to determine current fish populations and potential for stocking was scheduled for 2005/06. This was not udertaken due to other Fisheries priorities. Several surveys have been undertaken by the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) and by private consultants between 2004¨C06. Fisheries Victoria will consolidate existing survey data in relation to stock assessments.

NARRACAN LAKE

This water has been stocked with 7,000 brown trout and 3,000 rainbow trout since 2003. Subsequent netting surveys have failed to capture any trout. A revised survey strategy has been proposed for 2007.HAZELWOOD PONDAGE

A survey was conducted in February 2007 by Fisheries Victoria to assess the success of an Australian bass stocking in 2003.BLUE ROCK LAKE

A netting survey was conducted in February 2007 by Fisheries Victoria to determine species composition and baseline data for both brown trout and Australian Bass stocks. Two Australian bass were captured and both were assessed to be in good condition at about 560 g and 280 mm. Other fish caught were 3 redfin to 500 g and numerous European carp.

Fish Population Surveys

EILDON PONDAGE CREEL SURVEY UPDATE

Background

The pondage trout stockings are part of a Fisheries Victoria¡¯s Statewide fish stocking. Fisheries Victoria currently stocks nearly 6,000 trout into the Eildon pondage every year. Most of these fish are 2 and 3-\year-\old trout, weighing between 1 and 4 kilograms each. Angler access to the lake is very good and the waterbody is a popular fishery. A creel survey commenced in September 2003 to 'benchmark¡¯ the pondage fishery over one year, by answering the following questions:

  • Who catches what, where, when and how?
  • How long do stocked trout remain in the pondage before they are caught?
  • Where do anglers come from and how much do they spend on their visit to the pondage?
  • How satisfied are anglers with their fishing experience at the pondage?

This information will be used by fisheries managers to optimise the stocking strategy and, where possible, further improve fishing opportunities at the pondage.

Summary of Initial Results

Anglers fishing the pondage were of a range of ages. Approximately 23 per cent of interviewed anglers were likely to be exempt from holding a recreational angling licences to fish (<18 and ≥70 years of age). The majority of anglers were male. The pondage is popular with people who do not fish often and the majority of anglers were inexperienced and claimed to fish less than once per month. Nearly 13% claimed to fish the pondage more than 3 times per month. The most common methods of angling were bait, then bait and lure, then lure only. Fly fishing was the least popular method with only 2% of the interviewed pondage anglers claiming this as their only angling method.

Anglers caught 36% of brown trout and 48% of rainbow trout of the 6555 tagged trout stocked into the pondage over the period of the survey. Of the tagged fish reported, the majority of fish were caught within the first months of their release date. Anglers came from a range of locations to fish the pondage. Three hundred and ninety five different postcodes from six states were recorded from the interviewed anglers. Lake Hume Creel Survey Background With Victoria assuming responsibility for all of Lake Hume on 1 September 2004, a 3-\year study
(RFL and Fisheries Victoria funded) to learn more about the fishery was undertaken. The study commenced in 2005 and hopes to answer the following key questions:

¨C What fish species are in Lake Hume? ¨C How healthy are these populations?¨C Who catches what, where, when and how?¨C What contribution does fish stocking make to anglers¡¯ catches?

All of the 50,000 brown trout yearlings stocked into the lake in 2004 and 2005 were fin-\clipped to differentiate them from naturally recruited 'wild¡¯ fish. An additional 10,000 rainbow trout stocked by Rex Hunt Future Fish and funded by the RFL were also fin-\clipped prior to release.

SUMMARY OF INITIAL RESULTS

Creel surveys have now been completed with over 300 anglers interviewed. Redfin was the most popular and frequently caught fish species targeted by anglers however some trout and golden perch were also captured. Few Murray cod were caught. Estimates of the total annual recreational catch will be calculated with analysis to estimate annual harvest still to be completed.

Fish population surveys were conducted twice a year between 2004 and 2006 to determine the species caught and their relative abundance in the lake.

The results are presented below:

Species Length (mm) Weight (g)
Carp   438 fish caught
Redfin 243 284
Golden perch 325 753
Brown trout 357 566
Goldfish   23 fish caught
Murray cod   5 fish caught

HARRIETVILLE DREDGE HOLE (SOUTH) STOCK ASSESSMENT

In a response to a recommendation from CONS 2006, on 16 May 2006, a survey by Fisheries Victoria was conducted to determine the current species composition and the condition of the fish in Harrietville Dredge Hole.

Mesh net sampling was undertaken during the 'change of light' photoperiod between 15:30hrs and 19:30hrs. The nets consisted of four x 23 meter weighted nets in 89mm (3.5'), 102mm (4'), 114mm (4.5') and 127mm (5') mesh size. The four individual nets were set perpendicular to the shore. The sampled fish were measured to the nearest millimetre and weighed to the nearest gram, photographed and subsequently released back to the water. The results are presented below:

Species Length (mm) Weight (g)
Murray cod 352 519
Murray cod 504 1750
Golden perch 335 526
Catfish 530 2092
Tench 406 1115

CONCLUSION

The fish sampled were considered to be in good condition, with possibly two year classes of Murray cod. Small unknown species of forage fish were observed in the margins of the interconnecting channel. A small (probably seasonal) inflow of water exists in the south east and south west corners of the dredge hole.

The Harrietville Dredge Hole has easy access and includes a BBQ area, walking track/s, swimming access and a floating pontoon. It has a small / limited boat ramp on the southern side, which is (anecdotally) utilised regularly during peak periods.

Sumsion Gardens Angler Survey

As an outcome of CONS 2006, NEVRFish were to coordinate and document a local angler survey to determine catch rates and species composition at Sumsion Gardens. The survey was not undertaken because of insurance issues. A proposed redevelopment of the area negates the need for any survey in the short term.

Water Organisation Reason for Survey
Goulburn River between Seymour & Nagambie. Fisheries Victoria Current stock assessment is required prior to the commencement of stocking in the Seymour to Nagambie reach in 2007/08. This is consistent with the Goulburn-\Eildon Region Fisheries Management Plan (GERFMP) objectives.

Revised Broken Creek Stocking Regime

Background and Summary to Broken Creek Fishway Installation Program

In a study undertaken in the Broken Creek in 2000 by the DSE, (O¡¯Connor et al, 2003) fish surveys were undertaken in each weir pool between the Murray River and Nathalia. Results of these surveys indicated there were relatively fewer native fish upstream of Hardings Weir than below it (81% decrease). In 2000, construction of fishways on the lower Broken Creek above the Murray River opened this area to fish passage, however, at the time of the survey, the fishway on Hardings Weir had only recently been commissioned. It was suggested that the sharp decrease in native fish abundance upstream of Hardings Weir was a result of a lack of fish passage on this structure. Since June 2002 all the weirs up to and including Nathalia Town Weir have had operational fishways and consequently the fish communities in these upstream sections of the Broken Creek could also have changed significantly.

In 2005, a study was undertaken to investigate the status of fish communities in each of the weir pools in the lower Broken Creek between its confluence with the Murray River and the township of Nathalia. This data was gathered using the same methodology as in the 2000 boat lectro-\fishing surveys of the same weir pools and was used to identify the success of the Broken Creek fishways program in restoring native fish numbers throughout the lower Broken Creek. Each weir pool was sampled once in spring 2005 and once in autumn 2006.

Results indicate that native fish abundances have increased in the weir pools up to Nathalia Town Weir, which is located approximately 27 km (and includes four weirs) upstream of Hardings Weir (identified as a major barrier in 2000 surveys). Murray cod and crimson spotted rainbowfish showed the largest increases in abundance. For example, between 2000 and 2005/06, Murray cod demonstrated a 5.5 fold increase in abundance (from 10 fish to 55 fish) in the four weir pools between Hardings and Nathalia Town weirs. Furthermore, given that Murray cod less than 200 mm in total length (TL) were excluded from the 2005/06 data (to account for recent stockings within the system), it is probable this figure was an underestimate as it is likely that at least some of the excluded fish were not stocked. Indeed, in the 2000 sample (prior to stockings) fish less than 200mm TL made up 30 % of Murray cod numbers. If this number of fish were excluded from the 2000 analysis then Murray cod abundances show an eight fold increase in these same weir pools (from seven fish to 55 fish) in the six years between these two sampling periods.

FV comment.

This study supports previous research (MAFRI, 2000) that suggests similar impacts of fishways on fish distribution in the Broken Creek and may have implications for future management of Murray cod in connected waterways. As such, the minimal disruption of suspending Murray cod stocking for the years 2006/07 and 2007/08 is warranted as it presents an opportunity to evaluate the contribution of natural recruitment to the Broken Creek system from local spawning or immigration.

This proposal received unanimous stakeholder support.

REVISED GOULBURN RIVER STOCKING REGIME.

Fisheries Victoria proposed a revised stocking regime in the mid and lower reaches of the Goulburn River. Previously 20,000 golden perch and 50,000 Murray cod had been stocked each year below Murchison and a healthy native fishery has been established. A proposal to alternate thestocking of the same fish numbers between the lower reach and the mid reach between Seymour and Nagambie commencing with the mid reach in 2007/08, received unanimous stakeholder support. The proposal is also consistent with the Goulburn¨C Eildon Region Fisheries Management Plan, Part 2.6.6. (Seymour to Nagambie).

REVISED EILDON PONDAGE STOCKING REGIME.

In response to stakeholder feedback, a revised broodstock management strategy and the inclusion of Eildon Pondage in the Premier Lakes Program (thus a revised stocking regime) was proposed and received unanimous support.

The revised regime will continue with 'trophy¡¯ brown trout and rainbow trout ex-\broodstock being released, but the numbers will be reduced to allow for the inclusion of the 1kg. 'Premier¡¯ rainbow trout as well as advanced yearling rainbow trout.

VRFish

VRFish raised the issue of sediment loads and dozer lines around rivers resulting from recent fires.

Fisheries Victoria noted that there will be a 'Whole of Government¡¯ approach to bushfire recovery. Fisheries Victoria has been successful with funding to undertake a three-\year bushfire recovery project that will focus on monitoring the impact on, and assessing the recovery of, both salmonid and native fish in the fire affected areas; strategic stock enhancement where needed; socio-\economic studies; and promotional activities that will be linked to the 'Go Fishing in Victoria¡¯ initiative.

Information gathered from a previous study undertaken after the 2003 Victorian bushfires will be used, along with historical data, to measure the natural rate of recovery of the fisheries in waters that have been affected by the 2006 fires.

VRFish raised concerns about the removal of woody habitat.

Fisheries Victoria policy is clear that woody habitat is to be preserved, but the relevant water management authority may take action on issues such as boating safety.

Fish Stockings

The tables in Appendix 1 detail the planned stocking rates for the 2007/08 season as determined through the CONS process.

Premier Lakes will be partly stocked with larger 'Premier¡¯ rainbow trout (>1kg)at least four times per year (subject to suitable water conditions). Stocking at Lillydale Lake, Eildon Pondage and Kennington Reservoir has already commenced. Following further development of facilities, stocking of 'Premier¡¯ fish at Hyland Lake, Churchill and Jubilee Lake, Daylesford will commence in 2008.

Depending on availability, small numbers of ex broodstock rainbow trout may also be released into Family Fishing and Premier Lakes.

Advanced yearling rainbow trout generally range in weight from 150 ¨C 200 g, Premier fish are 1,000 g or larger and ex-\broodstock can be in excess of 3,000 g.

Fish Population Surveys

CAIRN CURRAN

Fisheries Victoria research staff commenced the Cairn Curran creel survey in late 2005.

The objective of the survey is to estimate the catch and determine angler preferences for stocked species. This information will assist Fisheries Managers and VRFish in considering the need to change management arrangements when the Bendigo Fisheries Management Plan is reviewed.

Outcomes will not be available until the completion of the survey.

LAURISTON RESERVOIR

The objective of this study is to determine the impacts of stocking triploid brown trout on the reservoir¡¯s roach population. Fish population surveys were undertaken in 2006 to establish a datum prior to the 2006 releases. Equal numbers of triploid and diploid (normal) brown trout were released with each type distinguishable by a different mark.

The inclusion of Malmsbury Reservoir in the stocking trial was not possible in 2006 because of access issues associated with low water. No stock assessment was possible. It will now be excluded from the trial.

Preliminary results will be made available once the assessment phase commences in 2007 and data is analysed.

TULLAROOP RESERVOIR

Fisheries Victoria was scheduled to conduct a stock assessment prior to CONS 2007 to determine success of salmonid stocking levels through fish condition and abundance.

Anecdotal and photographic information of substantial and regular catches of quality fish negated the need for the stock assessment. The 2006 stocking of fin-\clipped brown trout was cancelled by the relevant water management authority because of low water.

CULLULLERAINE LAKE

An outcome from the CONS 2006 meeting was for Fisheries Victoria to conduct a stock assessment of Cullullaraine Lake. The objective was to determine the success of native fish stocking levels through abundance and condition of fish species present. Lake Cullulleraine is stocked annually with Murray cod and golden perch.

In January 2007, Fisheries Victoria staff undertook a netting survey using a combination of 9 gill nets (mesh sizes ranging from 101mm to 127mm) and 10 fyke nets. All equipment was set from 1300hrs and checked at 2hr intervals throughout the afternoon, left in overnight and hauled at day break.

Kerang Lakes Recreational Stocking Asessment

This project proposal follows on from an Recreational Fishing Licence (RFL) funded stocking trial in five waters in the Kerang area. The five waters are Boga Lake, Charm Lake, Kangaroo Lake, Reedy (1st) Lake and Kow Swamp. Each was commercially fished prior to an RFL funded commercial licence buy-\back in 2003.

The RFL funded stocking trial also commenced in 2003. A combination of dart tagged yearling Murray cod and chemically marked fingerling golden perch were released annually with the expectation that angler feedback would give an indication of the contribution stocking was making to the overall fish population and angler returns.

Limited data has been forthcoming from tagged Murray cod while no data is available for golden perch. Indications from the small number of returns from dart tagged Murray cod are that movement throughout the system is occurring. Data from the chemically marked golden perch has not as yet been captured as it is an internal dye that can only be obtained through analysis of the otolith bones from captured fish.

This new proposal plans to evaluate through biannual stock assessments and angler surveys:

  1. The contribution of previous Murray cod and golden perch stocking on existing fish populations.
  2. The effect on overall fish populations of a revised stocking strategy.
  3. The effect of altered stocking rates on angler captures and satisfaction.

Fisheries Victoria has prepared a submission for RFL funding that will include stock assessments, analysis of fish samples, angler surveys and production of a report. If funded, the project will commence in 2007 with a report being produced after the completion of field work in 2011.

VRFish

BARKERS CREEK RESERVOIR

Coliban Water is the manager of Barkers Creek Reservoir. It is believed that an anti-\evaporation agent may have been used on the reservoir. Anglers have raised concerns that this agent may be the cause of severe bleeding noticed in trout caught on two occasions since 2nd February 2007, and the observation that there appeared to be very little insect activity.

VRFish had concerns the two issues (bleeding and use of agent) may be linked and requested isolating the issue with a sense of urgency to get some results.

Stocking requests have again been received from angler organisations for the Barwon River system and Mcleods Waterhole at Drysdale. Neither of these waters has been included in the table because of the following:

  1. McLeods Waterhole will not be stocked until significant water quality issues have been resolved.
  2. The Barwon River (and Leigh River) will not be stocked because of the presence of Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act listed species.

Other Management Issues

FISHERIES VICTORIA

Fisheries Victoria (regional staff) have liaised with Parks Victoria (PV), the water managers of Nursery Reservoir (Macedon), to determine angler participation levels.

No detailed data has been recorded.

Regular contact with PV will continue to determine participation.

Fisheries Victoria (regional staff) had contacted Barwon Water in an attempt to gain fish stock data from a proposed Bostock Reservoir carp reduction program.

The program was not undertaken by Barwon Water due to budget constraints.

Fisheries Victoria (regional staff) monitored fish length/weight data during events at Karkarook Lake. Anecdotal information indicated rainbows in excess of 1.5kg have been caught during 2006. Anecdotal angler catch reports indicate good populations of brown trout exist in the Moorabool River catchment despite the ongoing drought and recent fire.

VRFISH

VRFish confirmed the commitment to obtain fish condition data from any fishing events at Karkarook Lake.

VRFish will request length/weight data from metro anglers at planned 2007 events and will forward data to FV (regional staff).

Fish Population Surveys West Barwon Reservoir stock assessment 20-\21 Dec 2006 Introduction The West Barwon Reservoir is located 2km south of the township of Forrest in the Otways Ranges. The reservoir is used as a water storage facility for the city of Geelong and has been stocked with rainbow trout by Fisheries Victoria since 1965. The water also supports a self-\sustaining population of brown trout In recent years the Department has had requests from stakeholders to stock increasing numbers of salmonids. With minimal feedback on angler returns to guide future management, a stock assessment was undertaken to gain an indication of species structure and condition.

A total of five mesh nets from 2¡± to 4 ½¡± were set along the eastern branch of the West Barwon Reservoir. Total net length was 200m. Six brown trout and four redfin were captured.

Other Management Issues

FISHERIES VICTORIA

No issues raised.

VRFISH

VRFish raised the possibility of Lake Wendouree as a Premier Lake candidate for the South West region. Fisheries Victoria noted that the five Premier Lakes have already been established as the 'Go Fishing in Victoria¡¯ initiative is at capacity.

The issue or removal of dead woody habitat was also raised. Fisheries Victoria noted a Fisheries Note was in place and that permanent protection was being investigated.

The Ballarat and District Angling Association through VRFish suggested that stocking with a larger number of fry may be appropriate once habitat conditions improve and waters become available.

Fisheries Victoria noted that a drought recovery policy and stocking policy would guide Fisheries Victoria in recovery from the dry conditions.
