Appendix 1 - Proposed fish stockings - North East

USING THE TABLES

The tables present a summary of five Vic Fish Stock consultation meetings held across regional Victoria. They reflect the key outcomes from minutes recorded at each meeting that were circulated to all participants prior to finalisation. Proposals for stockings were received prior to meetings. These proposals were discussed and a final position determined by consensus. The outcome column represents the shared decision of the meeting attendees resulting from this assessment.

Continuation of Goulburn River stocking trial (2nd year of 5 year trial). Increased stocking numbers to 10,000 brown trout per year. The Victorian Fisheries Authority to release trout. Fish stocked between downstream of Eildon pondage to Molewsorth. Stockings spread out throughout season to coincide with high use holidays/long weekends, and prior to opening of trout season. Goulburn River
(Trawool to Seymour)

   

Native Fish Australia have requested that trout cod be stocked into the Goulburn River in the Trawool area, Murray cod in Seymour area and Macquarie perch near Ghin Ghin area. Goulburn Broken CMA support trout cod and Macquarie perch stocking in Goulburn River (Native Fish Australia) in principle, Would welcome further discussions on the proposal, that all stocked fish are calcein marked. Native Fish Australia also requested Murray cod stocked in Seymour area.

 

Native Fish Australia proposal for Trout cod and Macquarie perch in this area not supported in the short term as The Victorian Fisheries Authority currently putting resources into developing recreational trout cod fishery at Lake Kerford and Macquarie perch fishery at Expedition Pass Reservoir. If Macquarie perch numbers are available, stocking in the Goulburn River may be considered in 2011. Native Fish Australia can approach DSE regarding developing conservation stocking. Murray cod stocking in Goulburn Weir/Lake Nagambie extended up to Seymour area (see Nagambie Lake River).

Stocking deferred for this year. Concern regarding presence of suitable summer habitat for next year. Stream can have high water temperature and poor flows in summer. 12 month suspension only. Stocking of brown trout dependant on stream conditions and water quality in 2011.

Howqua River

    

Mansfield Shire request action to identify fish population size and to stock to fill gaps (given suitable habitat). Mansfield Shire suggest a focus stocking and rehabilitation of the Howqua River.

 

The Victorian Fisheries Authority currently support stocking of Murray cod, golden perch, rainbow trout and brown trout into Eildon Lake. The Victorian Fisheries Authority proposed at least 50,000 Murray cod and 20,000 brown trout be stocked into Eildon Lake as part of The Victorian Fisheries Authority's Bushfire Recovery Program. This is in addition to the on-going stocking program. Current fish (trout) are not stocked in upper reaches of inflowing Eildon Lake tributaries. These streams are considered to support self regulating trout populations.

Note: North East Angling Association do not agree with Kiewa Valley Angling Club suggestions. Previous fish kills have occurred (2 in last 10 years) and are concerned about fish kills happening again. Decision was made to stagger stocks of rainbow trout so that some are released later in November/December as requested by Kiewa Valley Angling Club.

Received request from Dartmouth Lake anglers who want trout stocked into lake as carp control.

Dartmouth Lake trout population is self-regulating. Investigate carp control options in future.

Small waters in bushfire affected areas

    

The Victorian Fisheries Authority proposed to support bushfire effected areas by stocking small waters (in/near) Bushfire affected areas. These fish are in addition to the existing stocking programs for these waters. Stockings dependant on securing Bushfire Recovery Funding.
