Register to collect Giant Spider Crab moults

A giant spider crab leaves behind its old shell when it moults to grow.

VFA is inviting recreational divers to register with us if you would like to collect a few empty giant spider crab moults, if you come across them during your own recreational dives around the aggregations this winter.

Preliminary analysis of giant spider crab Moults

We are planning to measure these moults. And also investigate options for future research on what else the shell can tell us about the crab and where it has been. Scientists can get a lot of information from a discarded shell!
