Black bream are found in most coastal rivers, lakes and estuaries across Victoria.

Stock structure

Victoria's black bream population is comprised of a large number of small independent biological fish stocks. Black bream tend to have a small home range and multiple stocks can be found within each estuary or lake.

Black bream was not included in the national Status of Key Australian Fish Stocks report 2014, but the status of black bream in the Gippsland Lakes has been assessed by The Victorian Fisheries Authority.

Management settings are also influenced by social and economic factors, and can take some time to affect a stock's status. This can depend on biological and environmental factors as well as the type and level of management changes implemented.
