Children must always be accompanied by an adult on activities and in the centre.

Daily activities at the MDFC

The Marine and Freshwater Discovery Centre will be open to the public during the school holidays, and will host our regular activities.

Our fish are fed throughout the day. You might be lucky enough to see them feeding while you are visiting.

No booking is necessary for these events - just come along!

Fishy tales

Cost: Free admission to children and one supervising adult

Suitable for people 2 to 5 years

A morning of fishy tales and craft presented by the Queenscliff Library.

Ocean Art

Cost: $10 per person

Suitable for people 5 to 12 years, who must be accompanied by an adult

Unleash your creativity - with the help of renowned artist/illustrator Jennifer Beck.

Marine debris sculpture and beach comb

Cost: $10 per person

Materials supplied - participants are encouraged to enrol into the beach discovery beforehand to collect beach debris for use in this activity.

Watercolor sketching

Cost: $10 per person

Materials provided, but if you already have a sketch book, bring it along.

Screen print your own cotton tote bag

Cost: $25 per person

Suitable for people 8 to 12 years

Screen print your own marine pattern onto a cotton Tote bag. Take a tour of the animals at the Centre and learn about the need to stop using plastic bags and their effect on the marine environment.

Each child will take home their own reusable bag.

All materials are provided. Please bring a water bottle, snack and wear clothes you don't mind getting a little inky.

Free come and try fishing days

Fishcare, supported by the Victorian Fisheries Authority, have organised experiences that teach all family members how to fish responsibly while enjoying what recreational fishing has to offer.

You must wear sturdy shoes that can get wet (no thongs, please), bring a hat, jacket and be SunSmart.

Children must bring an adult.

Hooked - Family fishing trip

Cost: $10 per person

Suitable for people 8 and over

Join us on a boat in Port Phillip Bay and learn about responsible fishing behaviours while having fun.

You must have a Victorian Recreational Fishing Licence unless you are exempt.

Marine biology cruise

Cost: $10 per person

Suitable for people 5 years & over

Join us on a boat on Port Phillip Bay and discover amazing marine life.

Canoeing

Cost: $10 per person

Suitable for people 12 years & over

Canoe over the seagrass meadows in Swan Bay to explore this amazing fish nursery.

Meet on the corner of Murray and Fellows Road, Queenscliff (just over the rainway line)

Please note, there are no toilets at this site. Public toilets are available at the skate park, or inside the Marine and Freshwater Discovery Centre.

Summer by the Sea activities (Coastcare)

Activities below are free, and suitable for all ages, however an age limit applies to snorkelling activities

Swan Bay discovery

Explore the mudflats in Swan Bay, an important fish nursery.

Please wear old runners/shoes you don't mind getting wet (no thongs), as well as a hat, sunscreen and drink bottle.

Meet at JL Jordan Reserve, just over the railway line (adjacent to the curved metal Swan Bay sign).

Please park near the railway station, otherwise a parking fee will apply.

Rockpool ramble

What curious creatures make the rockpools their home?

Parks Victoria Rangers will join us for our rockpool rambles.

Point Lonsdale Rockpools

Dress suitably for the weather, including toe-covering shoes and sunscreen.

Meet at the carpark at the base of the Point Lonsdale Lighthouse

Barwon Heads Rockpools

Dress suitably for the weather, including toe-covering shoes and sunscreen.

Meet at the first car park on Bluff Road.
